MTN, leader in telecommunications in Cameroon received the award of excellence during the celebration of 20 years of mobile telephony (Cammob 20-20) in Yaounde from 17 to 19 May 2021. The deliberations chaired by the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications were characterized by MTN Cameroon’s participation in various activities, notably the inaugural conference under the theme “the challenges of mobile telephony in Cameroon, 20 years later: what to remember? “.
The award received by MTN at the end of this celebration is a recognition by the public authorities of the important contribution by the operator to the development of the country, since the Company launched its operations in February 2000. This contribution by MTN Cameroon, which is still ongoing, can be summarised in the following main points.
Firstly, MTN Cameroon brings millions of Cameroonians closer together on a daily basis. From any region, division, district and town, it is possible to get in touch with loved ones. More than 95% of the population is covered by MTN’s #indomitablenetwork
Secondly, the company has already invested more than FCFA 1,000 billion for the development and maintenance of its world-class infrastructure in the country’s 10 regions. A similar amount has been paid into the state coffers over the same period. This represents a contribution of more than FCFA 1,000 billion to State revenue through taxes, customs duties, licensing fees and other royalties.
Thirdly, since 2000, MTN Cameroon has been actively involved in the development of individuals and businesses of all sizes. In 20 years, MTN has created more than 1,000 direct jobs and over 200,000 indirect jobs in Cameroon. The company has been certified as an employer of choice by the international organization, Investors in People. Behind these direct jobs are the development of local talent, promotion of local labour, trust in the youth and respect for diversity.
Moreover, MTN is accelerating the country’s digital transformation to contribute to the advent of a viable, and above all, sustainable digital economy, thanks to infrastructure and services. With regard to infrastructure, the country’s access to high-speed Internet is via the WACS submarine optical fibre, which is an initial investment by MTN Cameroon, the landing point of which has been handed over to the State of Cameroon. MTN relies on this infrastructure to offer simple, innovative, accessible and reliable services. For example, access to high-speed mobile internet or the MTN Mobile Money e-wallet has completely transformed the daily lives of people and businesses by making their lives easier.
Finally, it should be noted that, MTN goes beyond its core business to help communities through the first corporate foundation in Cameroon: the MTN Foundation, whose actions in the areas of health, education and access to drinking water impact more than 3 million people every day in the 10 regions of the country. Since the current health crisis, MTN has been working alongside the government and communities with a multitude of high-impact initiatives to reduce the spread of the Coronavirus. As an African company born in Africa, the duty of solidarity is in our DNA.
