2023 – Sustainability and Community: 21 Days of Y’ello Care 2023

27/12/25

Despite the turbulence caused by a pointless and, above all, unfair legal saga, MTN Cameroon will remain calm and focused on its customer satisfaction objectives.  This commitment will be well rewarded by its customers. In February 2023, the operator announced that it had exceeded 12 million mobile subscribers, with an additional 5 million active Mobile Money customers and more than 2 million active users on its Ayoba communication platform.

In a Cameroon undergoing digital transformation, MTN unveiled the results of Y’ello Digital Talent in March 2023, which is an initiative that brings young innovators to compete against each other. The winner will be the Skolarr e-learning platform, whose team represents the National School of Post, Telecommunications and Information and Communication Technologies.

What will all these innovations be without digital inclusion? MTN’s efforts will be rewarded with the granting of a Payment Service Provider licence issued by the banking regulator to Mobile Money Corporation (MMC). With this licence, MMC becomes a fully-fledged player in Cameroon’s financial ecosystem. It no longer acts solely as MTN’s operational arm for Mobile Money, but as an independent financial institution, capable of innovating, diversifying its services and responding more precisely to the needs of the population.

Cameroon will become even more digital, inclusive and sustainable in May 2023 when Mobile Money Corporation (MMC) – subsidiary of MTN Cameroon – officially obtains its PSP licence, an accreditation that will enable it to operate as a payment institution in Cameroon. This is a major regulatory step forward, giving MMC the keys to operational autonomy and paving the way for a profound transformation of the national financial landscape.

June 2023 will witness an unprecedented mobilisation of MTN staff and partners during the 21 Days of Y’ello Care. First, there will be a highly popular fundraising evening, the roll-out of projects in the regions and a reforestation operation with 1,600 trees planted in six regions.

A few months later, MTN is once again at the forefront of a new chapter in digital inclusion in Cameroon. On 25 July 2023 in Abong-Mbang, in the East region, MTN Foundation, in partnership with the African Institute of Computer Science (IAI), launched the MTN Digital Academy. This is a training programme dedicated to young people including women and people living with disabilities.

MTN is going even further and has decided to train and equip people with disabilities and, above all, to finance the launch of their commercial activities in order to promote their empowerment. This is part of the MTN Kawtal programme, which was officially launched in October 2023. The objective is clear:  accelerate the social and digital inclusion of people with disabilities by providing them with the tools they need to participate fully in the economic and civic life of the country.

In November 2023, MTN takes part in the first edition of the National Cybersecurity Days, organised by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. The event takes place in Garoua in the North Region and enables MTN to unveil its online child protection programme dubbed Help the Children be Children.

During the same month, MTN Cameroon marked its return to the South Region by opening a New Service Centre in Ebolowa. The city of Douala followed in December 2023 with the opening of the new Bonaberi touch point.
