Douala, 5 June 2024 – MTN Cameroon, leading electronic communications company in Cameroon, is delighted to announce the official launch of its employee volunteer programme, dubbed 30 Days of Y’ello Care, with a charity gala on 5 June 2024 in Douala.

The 21 Days of Y’ello Care is a volunteer programme initiated by the MTN Group, which commits its employees each year to carry out social actions for 21 days to improve the well-being of communities in the Group’s 20 subsidiaries around the world. To commemorate the creation of the MTN Group in 1994, the 2024 edition will be extended to 30 days.

For the launch of the 30 Days of Y’ello Care, under the theme ‘Education for rural and remote communities’, the charity gala was presided over by the Governor of the Littoral Region, Samuel Dieudonné Ivaha Diboua, representing the Minister of Basic Education, in the presence of the Mayor of the City of Douala, Roger Mbassa Ndine, the UNICEF Resident Representative, Nadine Perrault, and several other personalities, partners as well as customers of MTN.

This was an opportunity for MTN Cameroon to shoot several birds with one stone. Firstly, to present the projects that will be carried out during this 18th edition of the 30 Days of Y’ello Care. And secondly, to solicit the generosity of invitees by raising funds to finance the selected projects.

The projects are as follows:

  • Technology in primary education: The construction of a computer centre and eco-responsible infrastructures in the Littoral region, specifically in Government Primary School Bilonguè in partnership with UNICEF, the Ministry of Basic Education, local authorities and various stakeholders.
  • A reforestation programme in disaster areas: Planting trees in the Northern (Extreme North, North and Adamawa), Centre and West regions in collaboration with the International Federation of the Red Cross, Bafoussam city council, UNICEF and local stakeholders, including government authorities.
  • Financial inclusion of traditional chiefdoms: The organisation of training sessions for traditional chiefs in the use of digital tools to manage Cameroon’s heritage.

Invitees to the charity gala spontaneously responded to the appeal for donations. As a result, over FCFA 50 million in cash and equipment was pledged.

“I thank our invitees for their generosity. Thanks to their donations, we will be able to carry out high-impact projects that will enable communities to develop and, above all, become more empowered. Together, we are contributing to the progress of Cameroon,” said Mitwa Ng’ambi, CEO of MTN Cameroon.

The 30 Days of Y’ello Care activities will end on 30 June 2024.
