2018 – A hackathon of hope: Innovations from the University of Buea”
27/12/25
Modernisation and humanity will be witnessed again a year later, on 26 April 2018, with a major step forward in the digitisation of social services in Cameroon. On that day, MTN, once again a pioneer, signed an agreement with the National Social Insurance Fund (NSIF ) enabling social security benefits to be paid via MTN Mobile Money, the operator’s electronic money service. The new partnership demonstrates that a telecom operator can also be an agent of social transformation, capable of broadening access to dignity, social justice and modernity.
A few months afterwards, a group of young students from the University of Buea distinguished themselves at the very first 21 Days of Y’ello Care hackathon. On 16 June 2018, they developed an application that integrates Mobile Money into school management systems. From students to entrepreneurs, the group of students went on to create the start-up dubbed iClan, to be incubated by MTN. The rest is history.
