2019 – Listening, Adapting, Growing: The Path to 10 Million

Growth is back. On 31 January 2019, the CEO, Hendrik Kasteel presented MTN Cameroon’s New Year’s greetings to the press. February 2019 saw another innovation responding to consumer demands. MTN abolished out-of-bundle mobile internet billing. From now on, no bytes will be billed beyond the purchased volume without the customer’s consent.
On 19 June 2019, MTN Cameroon will receive the Financial Inclusion Award from the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Minette Libom Li Likeng, on the sidelines of the National Forum on Financial Inclusion in Yaounde. Behind this award lies a reality: millions of Cameroonians who, thanks to their mobile phones, can now send money, save, pay their bills, contribute to their pensions or receive their social benefits.
Within this context, the company decided to offer more opportunities to young graduates. In July 2019, the Youth Internship Programme (YiP) was launched in partnership with the Ministry of Employment and Vocational Training and the National Employment Fund. The programme offers academic and professional internships lasting three to six months for 200 youths. The aim is to give them their first professional experience, which will facilitate their integration into the world of work.
In addition to being a champion in supporting young people, MTN Cameroon will be recognised for the third time as the champion of internet speed by Ookla. This recognition as Cameroon’s fastest mobile network comes in August 2019. Each of the awards by Ookla is based on millions of tests carried out by users themselves via the Speed Test application.
In December 2019, the market leader, MTN rewrote the history of mobile telephony in Cameroon by exceeding the 10 million subscriber mark. This figure, which is much more than just a marketing indicator, symbolises a comeback. Ten million people have made their choice. Because MTN has listened, adapted and rebuilt, improving its identification procedures, strengthening the quality of its network and innovating its services.
