2023 – Affordable devices: Inclusive pricing strategy
27/12/25
In the early years of mobile telephony, the cost of communications was not affordable for everyone. In 2000, to be precise, a minute of call time cost nearly 600 CFA francs. MTN knew that it would not be possible to democratise access to communications while maintaining such rates. Hence a strategy to be put in place aimed at gradually lowering costs, despite the expenses.
This ongoing downward trend in tariffs was also observed for SMS and internet bundles. Today, there is a wide range of bundles and tariff plans that enable Cameroonians to communicate with complete peace of mind. “The prices of our products have fallen by more than 70% over the last eight years, hence making telecommunications prices in Cameroon among the most competitive in the region,” explained Mitwa Ng’ambi in May 2023.
Finally, and still within the framework of PAIJA, Wassande in the Adamwa region will see its turn. In May 2023, the water supply system will be transferred to Minader. This will enable hundreds of farmers and their families not only to have access to drinking water, but also to irrigate their crops and improve their productivity.
We could not remain silent in the face of the after-effects of scourges such as malaria, HIV/AIDS and cardiovascular diseases. In addition to sending text messages to raise awareness among the population, we helped distribute 15,000 impregnated mosquito nets throughout the country.
Regarding HIV/AIDS, we have helped to care for more than 5,000 patients. And thanks to the SMS Printer project with the Clinton Foundation, we have already ensured the rapid transmission of more than 5,000 early diagnoses to protect newborns from the risk of infection.
In the area of maternal health, around 100 women suffering from obstetric fistulas have been able to undergo surgery thanks to the MTN Foundation, thus enabling them to regain not only their health but also their social fulfilment.
Our actions are long-term oriented. Reason why, for the past 10 years, we have been focusing on hospital infrastructure that cares for people in need.
Three haemodialysis machines at the Yaounde General Hospital, and blood bank at Bonassama District Hospital. A sickle cell disease treatment unit at Laquintinie Hospital in Douala. Electric incubators in the regional hospitals of Garoua, Maroua and the district hospital in Nanga Eboko. Delivery tables at the Mayo Baléo District Hospital in Adamawa. Electron microscopes at the Nkongsamba Regional Hospital and the Baptist Hospital in Mutengene…
MTN Foundation has also refurbished the maternity wards at the district hospitals in Batouri, Guider and Mokolo. In the same vein, the midwifery schools in Bamenda, Garoua and Yaounde have been equipped with new materials. Because it is unacceptable that our mothers, sisters and daughters should die while giving life.
Ever closer to communities in rural areas, our actions extend to local healthcare. This has led to partnerships with several local organisations for mobile health campaigns that have had a positive impact on more than 67,000 people.
MTN Foundation supports flood victims in Buea
MTN Cameroon, through its corporate foundation, has provided support to more than 200 families affected by the floods in Buea, South-West Region, following torrential rain that fell on the city on the night of 18 to 19 March 2023. MTN Cameroon’s gesture of solidarity was marked by a ceremony held at the Buea Town Stadium esplanade on 24 March 2023.
Accelerating the empowerment of people living with disabilities
Larissa Dantche and Laure Djougo were honoured on 27 October 2023 at the MTN branch in Bafoussam in the West Region. They each received a kit consisting of credit worth250,000 CFA francs and equipment. This took place during a ceremony attended by the CEO of MTN Cameroon, Mitwa Ng’ambi, the Regional Delegate of Social Affairs, Fidelis Njie Ewumbue, and the Mayor of the municipality of Bafoussam 1, Cyrille Ngnang.
Larissa and Laure are among twenty (20) people living with disabilities who were selected across the country, being two (02) per region, by the MTN Foundation to be the beneficiaries of the first phase of this empowerment project.
MTN Mobile Money
This report, published in 2023, confirms the revolution underway, noting, for example, that the most widely used payment instrument in the CEMAC zone is instant electronic money transfers, accounting for more than 96% of transactions, or 2.3 billion operations. Cameroon accounts for 71% of such transactions.
This assessment positions the MoMo platform as a major accelerator of financial inclusion in Cameroon and Central Africa. Above all, it allows us to envisage a future of unlimited possibilities. Because the revolution underway is not about to stop.
Technology will continue to innovate to offer services that make people’s daily lives easier. The various market players will continue to collaborate to make new offerings more accessible. The market will therefore continue to grow, attracting more capital, more innovation, more competitiveness and, above all, bringing more value to all stakeholders: consumers, governments, investors, businesses, etc.
MoMo is the most reliable payment solution in Cameroon
