What are the Terms and Conditions of the MoMo Virtual Card?
The following terms and conditions comprise the agreement between Mobile Money Corporation (‘Fintech’ or ‘MMC’)) and You (‘the Customer’) in connection with the Virtual Card by MoMo (‘Card’). In this agreement “we”, “us” and “our” means Mobile Money Corporation and “you” means the customer and/or wallet holder.
- Definitions:
- “Fintech” means Mobile Money Corporation or MMC.
- “Card” means a virtual prepaid card issued by MMC, including any renewal or replacement card issued by MMC.
- “Walletholder” means the person(s) having power alone to operate the account/wallet subject to the terms and conditions of the service.
- “PIN” means personal identification number issued to You for use with the card and/or a One Time PIN (“OTP”) for card transactions.
- “Account” means the digital wallet account held or to be held with MMC or any other financial institution in the name of the cardholder, the number of which or shall be specified in the application form for the card and communicated to the cardholder, as appropriate.
- “Third-party App” means any mobile application belonging to a third party, such as a Merchant.
- “Transaction” means any payment for goods and services purchased over the internet from an online merchant using the online payment services or any of the other services offered using the card or card details.
- “e-Commerce” means where you can use your card online for purchases, subscriptions, recurring payments digital wallet transactions, in-App purchases and any other web transaction as determined by MMC from time to time.
- “Hot Card” means a card which has been reported stolen/lost or had its security compromised.
- “Merchant” means any person including a retailer or supplier who agrees with MMC to accept the card as a means of payment for goods and services in lieu of cash.
- “Business Day” means a day other than a Saturday or Sunday or public holiday, on which MMC is opened for general business.
- “Daily Spending Limit” means the maximum amount that a cardholder can spend in a day from the Card irrespective of total amount in his/her account/wallet.
- “Limits” refers to daily card transaction limits which are set by MMC, from time to time.
- “Internet” means a global network accessible through an Internet Service Provider, by any person or business.
- “Virtual Card(s)” means a digital card that can be used for eCommerce transactions, In-App purchases, streaming services, subscription payments and any other type of transaction as determined by MMC from time to time.
- “Card transaction” means one or all of the following transactions by means of the Card:
- Any transaction debited against your Card Account for transactions concluded with a Card, card number and/or One Time Password (OTP) to pay for any goods or services or to transact using an electronic device.
- Paying for goods and services purchased over the Internet from an online merchant using the online payment service.
- Digital Payments via any of the supported Digital Wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay. etc.);
- Subscriptions and other recurring payments; or
- eCommerce transactions;
- In-App purchases and any other type of transaction as determined by MMC from time to time.
- “Repeat Payment” or “Recurring Payment” means an authorization provided by you that permits the Participating Merchant to receive regular payments from you by debiting your MoMo wallet on a fixed date and time and usually for a fixed amount.
- Card Application and Activation
- To opt into the Virtual Card, you must dial *126#, select Virtual Card and follow the guide. Once you enter your PIN, you will receive a 16- digit Card Number, CVV and card validity that will appear on your device as a flash SMS. The 16-digit number will be your Card Number which together with each CVV sent to you will be your unique credentials required to complete Transactions.
- To apply for a Card, you must have an active MoMo Account. Your use of the MoMo Virtual Card is subject to these Terms and Conditions as may be varied by us from time to time.
- The Card will be issued in the name as it appears on your MoMo Account.
- We reserve the right to request further information pertaining to transactions you undertake in line with applicable regulations at any time, failure to which may result in limitation on usage of the Virtual Card including suspension or termination of the account.
You may be asked to submit documentation to us for the purpose of identification in accordance with our Customer Due Diligence, or Regulatory requirements or when need be to update your details. We may also use electronic methods to satisfy our Customer Due Diligence requirements
- available in our custodian as obtained during the activation of your MoMo Account,
- This includes but not limited to:
- Name, address, phone number, date of birth, etc. and your personal background.
- information related to transactions arising from your transactions with and through us, and from other financial institutions.
- information you provide upon request for any of our products and services;
- information for the provision of products and services.
- and information about financial behavior such as your payment history and credit worthiness.
- We may collect and confirm this information during our relationship. We may obtain this information from a variety of sources, including from you, from service arrangements you make with or through us, from credit reporting agencies and financial institutions, from registries, from references you provide to us and from other sources, as is necessary for the provision of our products and services.
- This includes but not limited to:
- You can consult your Card details via *126# and a flash notification with Card number, CVV and expiry date will be displayed to you. This limits your card details being shared with unauthorized person(s).
- Issuance of Cards
- A Card is issued to the individual or specific business holding a MoMo Account with MMC.
- MMC will issue a card only if the walletholder has completed the application and it has been duly accepted by MMC; or if MMC at its discretion is replacing or renewing a card.
- The card is valid from the issuing date until the expiry date or notice from MMC that the use of the Card is terminated or expired.
- This agreement becomes effective, and all provisions of the agreement will apply to MMC and the account holder , upon the earlier of:
- When you create a Card through MoMo App or via the MoMo USSD code;
- The use of the card number and/or the account and/or the account number by You
- Use of Card
- The card may be used to pay for goods and services or for any other purposes MMC allows from time to time, and up to Your daily and monthly spending limit.
- Only the person in whose name and MSISDN the card is issued is empowered to use the card and so all possible care must be exercised to ensure safety of the card. Any authority given in any form by You to any other person shall not entitle such person to use the card.
- Card use is subject to the terms and conditions prevalent at the time of use.
- The card cannot be used if any of the following situations occur:
- validity of the card has expired;
- the card has been placed on hotlist, or;
- notification has been given to You by MMC or any notice of withdrawal or cancellation of the card.
- You will be liable for the full amount of all Card Transactions and Charges debited to the card.
- If the Card expires or is compromised by a third party. In such event, the card shall be replaced at our sole discretion.
- MMC will never ask You to disclose your card details via any medium. You may have to enter your 3D Secure Code to finalize a purchase. The 3D Secure Code gives you an extra layer of security when you make a purchase, such that a Participating merchant can never see . You may not always be asked to enter a CVV or a 3D Secure Code to complete a purchase, thus always make sure you want to proceed with the Transaction before you provide your Card details to a Participating merchant.
- Your Card(s) is automatically activated when it is created and has a Card Verification Value (CVV) to be used for transactions.
- You must take the necessary precautions to safeguard your device(s) and access credentials, accounts, cards, and banking channel access mechanisms, such as passwords, and One-Time-Passwords (OTPs).
- You undertake not to effect transactions in excess of the funds loaded into the card. If You do not have sufficient funds available in the card or if You have defaulted under this agreement in any manner:
- MMC shall be entitled, but not obliged, to refuse to make any payment in respect of any transaction or to process a transaction; and
- MMC shall not be liable for any costs incurred or any loss or damage suffered by You in this regard, provided that MMC did not act with gross negligence or fraudulent intent.
- You understand and agree that:
- limits are imposed on transactions, and the maximum amount of any transaction may depend on whether the transaction is a contactless transaction or performed online or offline (“under floor limit purchases”). You will not be allowed to exceed any of these limits, and should You exceed an under-floor limit purchase You agree to be liable for such under-floor limit purchase;
You undertake to use the card, card number and/or account and/or account number only in a secured environment and acknowledge that any use of the card, card number and/or account or account number in an unsecured environment or at
- a public device or terminal which is generally accessible by the public may result in Your details being compromised and/or losses for which You may be held liable.
- Cancellation and Expiration
- You have the right to cancel your Card at any time through USSD, App or contact our Call Centre on 8787.
- You have the right to renew your card after expiration.
- If you cancel your Card for whatever reason, we will immediately block your Card from making further transactions. You will not be entitled to a refund of money already spent on Transactions for purchase onto a Participating merchant, or pending transactions or any fees due in the use of the Card.
- If you request for a cancellation of your Card over the phone, we may ask you to provide us with Customer Due Diligence information before we proceed with your cancellation request.
- If at any time:
- You breach any of the terms of these Conditions of Use; or
- we have reasonable grounds to suspect that you have undertaken fraud, theft, illegal activities, activity that interferes with the MoMo system or dishonesty; or
- we receive a complaint related to your unlawful use of your MoMo Account or Card action.
We will be entitled to take such steps as we consider reasonably necessary to restrict your right to use the Card, which, without limitation, shall include, without prior notice to you, refusal to authorize a Purchase, suspension, withdrawal, or cancellation of your Card. If we do this, we will not be liable to you for any direct or indirect loss or damage whatsoever because of the action taken. We may notify you as soon as possible or as soon as we are permitted by law to do so once we have taken these steps.
- You will be able to use the Card until it expires. Your Card number will be valid for 12 months. Should you choose to renew your Card after expiry, any transactions details relating to your expired Card will automatically be transferred to your new Card Or MoMo Account where card is not renewed.
- If your card has expired and you have not received your new card number upon renewal, contact our Call Centre on 8787.
- Card Transaction
- Once a purchase has been authorized, the payment related thereto cannot be stopped.
- We may be requested to authorize a purchase or other payment that you make with your card. If we do, your card balance will be reduced by the amount of the authorization, however, we may refuse a request for an authorization.
- If MMC considers it necessary, we may without notice:
- Refuse to authorize transactions;
- Cancel or suspend the right to use the card entirely, or in respect of specific functions;
- Refuse to replace any card without affecting your outstanding obligations under this agreement which shall remain in force.
- You can request a reversal or a refund from the participating merchant.
- Should you fail to reach an amicable agreement with the Participating merchant, you may contact our Call Centre on 8787 or visit our Service Centre where you may lodge a claim. We shall thereafter refer the claim to Mastercard for resolution.
- Some subscription transactions will use the Card(s) CVV for the first transaction or registration activity to authenticate the card and account.
- Recurring subscription transactions may be validated using only the card number and expiry date.
- Repeat or Recurring Payments will only be completed if you have sufficient funds in your card.
- Fees and Charges
- You may be charged fees by MMC for issuance / replacement of card(s), card transactions and for the use of these services by you.
- You will be charged an initial card issuance fee of 3000XAF. This amount can be varied by us from time to time.
- MMC has the right to debit the Customer’s account/card for fees, statutory levies and taxes.
- Authority to Debit the Account
- Subject to applicable law, You shall reimburse MMC for all payments which MMC has made, or is required to make, for and on behalf of You in respect of any transaction.
If a participating merchant requests to verify your card, a verification fee shall be debited from your account.
- Misuse of Your Card
- The card is issued on the condition that MMC shall have no liability for the unauthorized use of the card.
- If Your card is stolen or compromised by someone who has discovered Your card details, You will have the ability to block and unblock your Virtual Card(s) on the USSD menu *126# orMoMo App and your Card(s) can be kept in a blocked state and only unblocked when required for use.
- If your card is compromised, You must inform us immediately.
- You are responsible for the safekeeping and appropriate use of the card.
- You shall take all necessary precautions to prevent the Card from being used by a third party and/or that any of the Authentication measures become known to any unauthorized person.
- You acknowledge that the use of the Card and the Authentication measures gives access to the card and the Your information. You waive any claim(s) which You may have against MMC with reference to any damages, loss or liability that You may suffer as a result of such access and/or use.
- MMC shall not be liable in any way if You do not take reasonable precautions to prevent unauthorized use of the account or the card. Specifically, but without limitation, MMC shall not be liable in any way if You use any verification mechanism in a public place or in any other unsecured environment in such a manner that the confidentiality and secrecy of the verification mechanisms is compromised. Similarly, MMC will not be liable in any way if You do not make use of or do not implement or do not respond to any verification mechanism or if You store or record any verification mechanism on a computer, phone or medium.
- You acknowledge and agree that contactless transactions are conducted at the Your own risk.
- You must report or log a dispute or fraud claim by calling 8787.
- Our Right to Stop Transactions Or To Stop A Card
- We may prevent Transactions from being initiated or processed if:
- you do not provide the information that we need from you in terms of the applicable laws; or
- we suspect that the Card is no longer compliant with the
- we may stop a Card at any time, without notice, for example if:
- you breach (go against) these terms and do not correct the breach within five (5) days after we have asked you to;
- you breach any of the terms and conditions of your card account;
- we suspect the card if used for fraudulent or illegal, unauthorised or improper activities;
- we suspect that we are exposed to any risk through your use of a card; or
- we are required by any law, any regulatory authority to do so or ordered by a court of law to do so.
- No Statements
- You can consult your card transaction history on the MoMo USSD menu *126# and subsequently on MoMo App or at our Service centers. There may be a delay in your card transactions reflecting on your transaction history.
- Warranties (Promises) made by you
- You confirm that:
- You are at least 21 years of age;
- You have the capacity to accept these Terms and conditions;
- You are able to enter into a contract (you have full contractual capacity) and no court has declared you mentally unfit to do so;
- You are not listed on any sanctions list of prohibited or restricted parties;
- You have given us the right information; and
- You read and understood these Terms before you created a Card.
- Third Party Apps
- Any Third-party App will be subject to the privacy notice or terms of use applicable to such Third-party App. It is your responsibility to review the relevant policies before submitting your information to the Third-party App or website, and you provide your information at your own risk. You indemnify us from any losses or damages you may suffer as a result of your access to or use of any Third party App.
- You hereby agree that MMC will not be liable for any of the following:
- The content, security, operation, use, accuracy or completeness of any Third-party Apps or of the products or services that may be offered or obtained through them;
- The accuracy, completeness or reliability of any information obtained from a Third-party App or website;
- The ownership or right of use of any licensor of any software provided through any Third-party App or website;
- Any content featured on Third-party Apps that are accessed through the links found on the Mobile App or website;
- Any failure or problem that affects the products or services obtained through a Third-party App or website, for example from any telecommunication service provider, Internet service provider, electricity supplier, local or other authority; or
- Any Transactions that you carried out using your Card on a Third-party App or website are subject to these Terms.
- Confidentiality
- MMC understands that Your personal information is important to you. By using our products and/or services, you acknowledge that your personal information will be processed by us and third parties (if necessary) according to our Privacy Policy, which is in line with all applicable laws on Data Privacy and Protection.
- It is your responsibility to read and understand the contents of the Privacy Policy which is available on our website at [•] or you can ask us to email it to you.
- MMC will maintain the confidentiality of your personal information and will implement security safeguards to secure your personal information as set out in the Privacy Policy.
- The Privacy Policy is an important part of these terms and includes what personal information is; what information we process; how we process your information; where we collect your information; who we share your information with; your rights as a data subject and the complaints contact details.
- Limitation of Liability
- You hereby undertake and agree to fully indemnify and reimburse MMC against all claims, losses, damages, actions, proceedings, expenses, costs, interest and charges whatsoever which may be taken or made against or incurred by MMC in relation to the misuse of your card.
- If we are unable to debit Your account because the account has been closed or for any other reason beyond our control, you shall still be liable to pay us applicable fees and charges for all transactions.
- You agree and acknowledge that the Card services provided by MMC are reliant on the availability and functionality of networks, platforms and services of third parties outside the control of MMC. Consequently, MMC shall not be liable for all matters relating to the Card which requires MMC’s engagement with any third-party including third party processor, MasterCard, etc.
- You agree to pay us for any damage, loss, costs, or expenses which we may suffer or incur as a result of You breaching any of these Terms, including (i) not having the required funds to complete any payment instructions; (ii) not providing the necessary funds following an instruction effected by you; or (iii) us receiving incorrect or unauthorized instructions from you and acting on such incorrect or unauthorized instructions, except where we have acted fraudulently or in bad faith in completing such instruction, in which case, our liability shall be restricted to any loss of interest.
- We do not accept liability if we are unable to provide part of our service for a reason beyond our control (for example, industrial action, failure of power supply or equipment, failure of third-party services and platforms etc.).
- Non-enforcement of any condition of this agreement, or delay in enforcing such condition will not prevent MMC from enforcing the conditions at a later date.
- MMC is not responsible if a request for authorization is declined or if a card is not accepted in payment or for any loss or damage resulting from the way in which either decision is communicated to you
- MMC will not be liable for:
- any unauthorized card-based transactions until MMC has been notified of the misappropriation, loss or theft of the card;
- any unauthorized transaction that has been debited to the card through any person other than the cardholder using the One-Time-Passwords ;
- any unauthorized transaction that has been debited to the card through any person other than You using the card for purchases/transactions made by mail order, telephone or electronically.
- MMC shall not in any way be liable to You if the card is not acceptable to, or is rejected by, any merchant and/or any other party for any reason or if MMC declines to approve any transaction.
- Any claims or disputes between You and any merchant regarding the nature, quality or quantity of any goods acquired or services rendered from or by the merchant or on the merchant’s behalf or any other matter or thing, shall in no way limit or affect MMC’s rights to receive payment or give rise to any rights of set-off or counterclaim against MMC.
MMC will not be responsible for any failure, malfunction or delay of any networks or electronic or mechanical device or terminal used in the acceptance and processing of transactions and any other use of the card. MMC will not be liable to make good or compensate You for any damages, losses, claims or expenses on consequence thereof (“Losses”) You accordingly waive any claim You have or may have against MMC and further indemnify MMC against any third party claims against MMC for such Losses.
- Changing the Terms of this Agreement
- We may change, amend, repeal, add or update these terms and conditions from time to time after giving you 30 days’ notice via SMS, or by any other means in writing.
- Termination
- You may end your use of the card (and the use of the card by any additional person(s)) at any time by giving us notice in writing and/or cancelling the card via the MoMo App or USSD.
- Either you or we may end this agreement by giving written notice to the other, but this will only be effective once all cards issued to you have been cancelled and all liabilities under this agreement settled.
- We may re-issue cards from time to time for use in accordance with this agreement until it has ended.
- Compliance with Applicable Laws and Reporting of Transactions
- You acknowledge that MMC is obliged to report transactions occurring outside the juridiction, which is not that of the account, will be converted into the currency in which the account is denominated at Mastercard’s prevailing wholesale market rate of exchange, subject to any applicable exchange control regulations, on the date of posting of any such transaction to the account and shall be shown on Your statement in local currency. You acknowledge that there may be a delay before a transaction in a foreign country is debited or credited, as the case may be, to the account and You agree to bear the foreign exchange risk in respect of any such delay. All transactions in a foreign country will incur a commission fee to be determined by MMC from time to time. The fee will be included in the amount posted to the account in terms of the provisions of this clause.
- MMC, as part of the MTN Group, is obliged to comply with international and local sanctions and anti-money laundering laws and policies. MMC will, due to these obligations and further towards fighting and combatting fraud and related criminal activities, therefore, screen, verify and process all walletholders and thereafter monitor all information, instructions and transactions by and on behalf of the walletholder or guarantor and the business relationship on a continuous basis. This may result in the prohibition, limitation or delay in the execution of instructions or transactions and even in the suspension of the account and the declining or terminating of any transaction or the business relationship with the To the extent permitted, MMC shall advise the walletholder of any action it intends to take in terms hereof. The walletholder acknowledges and confirms that neither MTN Group, nor its employees, officers, or directors, shall be liable for any direct, indirect or consequential loss, damage, cost or expense whatsoever that may be suffered or incurred by the walletholder as a result of, or arising from or relating to any such prohibition, limitation, delay, decline or termination due to the implementation of this clause.
- You hereby undertake and warrant that when using the card or the account:
- You will comply with all applicable laws and that the card and/or the account will not be used for any unlawful purposes including engaging in unlawful gambling activities via the internet or any other means;
- You will comply with all applicable anti-corruption laws; and
- You will not conclude any transaction with a person on the Sanctions List or a person located in any Sanctioned Country and will ensure that the card and/or the account are not used for a Sanctioned Transaction. Information regarding Sanctions, Sanctions Lists or Sanctioned transactions can be obtained from the applicable Sanctioning Body’s website.

- Governing Laws
- These Terms and Conditions are governed and interpreted by- laws applicable to the Republic of Cameroon. Any controversy arising from the interpretation or execution of these Terms and Conditions shall be determined by the competent courts in Cameroon.
- General
- The terms and conditions, together with all relevant MMC policies, as changed or replaced by MMC and documentation issued to You, will form the whole of the agreement between You and MMC.
- Every provision of the terms and conditions is deemed to be separate and severable. In the event that any provision is found to be defective and unenforceable for whatever reason, the provision may be severed from the remaining provisions and the validity of the remaining provisions will continue to be of full force and effect.
- You shall not be entitled to cede or assign to any other person any of the Your rights or obligations in respect of or arising out of the agreement or the use of any card or of the account without MMC’s prior written consent.
- MMC shall be entitled to cede and assign its rights and obligations in respect of or arising out of the agreement or the use of any card or the account by giving notice thereof to You. Failure to provide the client with notice shall, however, not affect the validity and enforceability of such cession and assignment.
- Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in the agreement, MMC shall be entitled to amend the terms and conditions from time to time. The updated version shall be published on MMC website at https://momo.mtn.com/home-page/.
