2022 – Certified for Trust: MoMo’s GSMA Mobile Money recognition

2022 is the year of returning to the office after nearly two years of remote working imposed by Covid-19. During this period, MTN Cameroon rolled out several initiatives aimed at internal and external stakeholders to tackle the pandemic.
Internally, our approach was to keep operations running while protecting our people. Externally, we provided support to various stakeholders, especially communities, to ensure they could face the pandemic with hope.
MTN Mobile Money
On the MoMo platform, more than 5 million users use these services every day. This is much more than the 2.8 million bank accounts that exist in Cameroon, according to the Bank of Central African States (BEAC) report on payment services in CEMAC in 2022.
MoMo is the most reliable payment solution in Cameroon
Mobile Money Corporation, subsidiary of MTN Cameroon, is pleased to announce the renewal of the GSMA Mobile Money certification for its MoMo mobile payment platform. This certification, issued in January 2023 by the GSM Association following an audit conducted from 1 to 30 December 2022, confirms MoMo’s compliance with industry-best practices.
Through this certification, GSMA, which represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide in the broader ecosystem, recognises MTN Cameroon as an operator offering secure, transparent and resilient financial services.
“Certified companies are at the forefront of the mobile money industry. They have demonstrated their commitment to protecting consumer rights, thus delivering reliable and secure services, combating money laundering and terrorist financing. Their business practices are among the best in the industry,” explains the GSMA.
Indeed, “obtaining this certification is based on an independent and rigorous process built around eight principles,” says Alain Claude Nono, CEO of Mobile Money Corporation. These principles require the MoMo service to have effective processes in place to:
– Protect customer funds from the risk of loss
– Combat money laundering, terrorist financing and fraud
– Properly manage staff, agents and third parties
– Ensure the proper operation and reliability of the service
– Protect the security of the systems supporting the service
– Communicate fees, terms and conditions and information to customers in a transparent manner
– Respond effectively to customer requests and complaints
– Protect customers’ personal data
“Having successfully completed all these steps for a second time means that our platform is reliable and, above all, deserves the trust of our millions of customers across Cameroon who use it every day to send money to their loved ones or make payments in shops,” continues Alain Claude.
GSMA Mobile Money certification is a source of pride for Mobile Money Corporation. The company is and remains the first and only GSMA Mobile Money certified operator in the CEMAC zone.
“This great achievement is the result of significant financial and technological investments made by MTN to facilitate the development of an inclusive digital economy in Cameroon. This is also the efforts of our staff, who don’t relent to offer Cameroonians more innovative digital solutions,” concluded Alain Claude.
