2020 – MTN Cameroon’s response to Covid-19 pandemic
27/12/25
Less to say that Laquintinie Hospital in the city of Douala received a breath of fresh air on 13 November 2020. An oxygen plant was donated by the MTN Foundation to enable the hospital to better care for its patients, particularly those with Covid-19.
For the hospital’s Director, Professor Noël Emmanuel Essomba, this donation comes at just the right time. “Laquintinie Hospital has recorded nearly 40% of coronavirus cases involving respiratory distress,” he revealed during the oxygen plant’s inauguration ceremony. The infrastructure consists of four gas cylinders capable of continuously supplying twelve rooms in the Samuel Kondo ward, where Covid-19 cases are treated.
“This mini oxygen plant that we have just donated to Laquintinie Hospital in Douala is part of MTN Cameroon’s contribution to the national response plan against the Covid-19 pandemic, the damage caused by which we are all aware of…” Melvin Akam.
MTN Foundation also took the opportunity to donate Covid-19 protection kits to Laquintinie Hospital. This gesture is one of a long list of initiatives undertaken by Cameroon’s leading telecommunications company to help the country cope with the global health crisis triggered by the spread of the Coronavirus.
During the pandemic alert period, MTN Cameroon sent more than 350 million Covid-19 awareness SMS messages to its subscriber base.
Hospital staff benefited from nearly 4 million minutes of free calls on the MTN network.
MTN subscribers were able to send nearly 4 billion free SMS messages to their loved ones to check on them during the Covid-19 crisis.
More than a million pupils and students were able to access free online educational content via the MTN network after schools and universities were closed
Covid-19 protective equipment were distributed to more than ten hospitals, 21 municipalities, 4,000 teachers, 1,000 callbox operators, ten primary schools and media personnel.
