MTN Foundation announces that, it is providing free access to websites and other digital platforms dedicated to education from MTN’s network in Cameroon.

This initiative, which is part of the national response to the spread of covid-19, will enable pupils, students and teachers to access the educational resources they need, without consuming their airtime or internet bundles, at this time when schools and universities have shut down.

The list of relevant platforms is available on MTN Cameroon’s website at mtn.cm/school-goes-on. This list includes local and international platforms and will evolve according to the demands of learners and institutions.

Free access to educational platforms enriches the measures taken by MTN Foundation as part of the national response to covid-19. In agreement with the Ministry of Public Health, MTN Foundation supports the ”National Response Operational Plan against covid-19 in Cameroon 2020”, through the intensification of awareness, facilitation of communications by health personnel and assistance in the establishment of testing centers.

Following the discovery in Cameroon of the first cases of COVID-19 and announcement by the Government of measures to deal with the epidemic, MTN Cameroon has taken steps to: 1– ensure the availability of its network and services to enable Cameroonians to stay connected in these difficult times; 2– safeguard the health of its customers and that of its employees in its Service Centres and all its sites; 3– provide digital solutions that contribute to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.

As an extension of the steps taken by the company, MTN Foundation, which implements the social responsibility policy of MTN Cameroon, is taking a number of initiatives to contribute to Cameroon’s response against the spread of Coronavirus COVID-19.

Consequently, in agreement with the Ministry of Public Health, MTN Foundation will support the “National Operational Plan for Preparation and Response against COVID-19 in Cameroon 2020” through the following initiatives:

  1. Intensification of awareness campaigns. MTN’s network, technologies and digital platforms will be used to disseminate the messages designed by the Ministry of Health to address the crisis.
  2. The facilitation of communications by health personnel involved in operations to combat the spread of COVID-19.
  3. Contributing to set up test centres envisaged by the Ministry of Public Health.

MTN Foundation also plans to facilitate access to educational resources by pupils, students and teachers, even in cases of isolation or confinement.

The response against this serious health crisis can only be a collective one. We must stand as one with the Nation to repel COVID-19. At MTN Foundation, and at MTN, we are doing our part in this collective struggle. We also invite our communities to respect the measures enacted by the competent authorities to limit the spread of the virus and thus save lives,” said the Executive Secretary of the MTN Foundation, Jean-Melvin Akam.

Within the framework of its response plan to the health crisis caused by the Coronavirus / COVID-19, MTN Cameroon announces the suspension, effective Friday, 20 March 2020, of the payment of fees on money transfers between MTN Mobile Money accounts.

This measure suspending the payment of fees concerns money transfers for amounts up to 20,000 FCFA (twenty thousand francs). The measure will be limited to 3 transactions per day, per account, and will be valid for a period of 30 days. This may be reviewed based on the evolution of the health crisis.

MTN Cameroon, by suspending the payment of money transfer fees between Mobile Money accounts, seeks to provide its support in the fight against this Coronavirus, by reducing the use of cash as much as possible, and favoring distance payments.

Mobile Money is a key element in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is a payment method that does not require the use of cash, a possible vector for spreading the virus. The use of Mobile Money may therefore contribute in limiting the spread of COVID-19.

By facilitating distance payments, Mobile Money may equally enable users to overcome the constraints imposed by the measures limiting travel and the movement of persons in a bid to reduce the risks of propagation of the virus. Companies and individuals may therefore carry out necessary transactions, even while isolated or confined thanks to this solution.

At MTN Cameroon, we have always put our customers first. Faced with the current difficult situation that we are passing through together as a result of the propagation of COVID-10, we will be closer to them. We are doing everything in our power to ensure that they remain connected and in touch with their loved ones. We are equally working to provide them with solutions that facilitate their daily lives as much as possible. Mobile Money is one of these solutions. We encourage companies and Cameroonians to take full advantage of this solution to better handle the current situation”, said MTN Cameroon’s Chief Executive Officer, Hendrik Kasteel.

It should be noted that customers whose Mobile Money accounts are not yet operational may activate them by calling customer services using the number 8787.

With 10 million subscribers being 49.5% market share and a turnover of nearly 219 billion FCFA, the leader of the Electronic Communications sector in Cameroon returns to growth in 2019, after four years of sharp decline.

Douala, 11 March 2020. The MTN Group, African leader in telecommunications operating in 21 countries including  Cameroon, published on  11 March 2020 in  Johannesburg, South Africa, its consolidated results for 2019 . These results are characterized by subscriber growth which as of 31 December 2019 stood at 251 million in the 21 countries versus 233 million in 2018.

The Cameroonian subsidiary, MTN Cameroon for its part, achieved a solid performance in 2019. Despite the crisis in the North-West and South-West regions, which is still impacting the company’s performance, MTN Cameroon’s turnover stood at 218,7 billion FCFA as of 31 December 2019, up by 3.2% from the previous year. MTN Cameroon has thus regained its growth trajectory after four years of sharp decline.

This increase in turnover, which began in the fourth quarter of 2018 and was consolidated at close to 10% during the last six months of 2019, driven by a strong progression in Data services with close to 3,5 million users and sustained growth in the mobile money business which today records over 8 million subscribers.

MTN Cameroon also recorded an exponential increase of 26.25% in its customer base, with nearly 2 million new subscribers gained in fiscal year 2019. With 10.1 million subscribers and 49.5% market share as of 31 December 2019, MTN is the undisputed leader in the Electronic Communications sector in Cameroon.

This solid performance is the result of the customer-oriented strategy implemented by the company with major investments in network expansion and quality improvement. The MTN network is recognized by the international agency Rohde & Schwarz as the best infrastructure in Cameroon for voice and mobile internet services; while Cameroonians appreciate MTN as the No. 1 NPS in the sector.

The company has also placed special emphasis on the development of its mobile money business which is today not only the most available and secure mobile wallet in Cameroon, but equally the only mobile wallet with the GSMA certification in the entire CEMAC zone.

Commenting on the publication of the annual results, Hendrik Kasteel, Chief Executive Officer of MTN Cameroon said: “Thanks to the confidence of our clients and extraordinary commitment of all our teams, we have been able to achieve a very good performance in a difficult environment. With 10 million subscribers and improved positive performance quarter after quarter since the end of 2018, MTN Cameroon is now well positioned to enter a new phase of growth. In 2020, as we celebrate 20 years of presence in Cameroon, the company is committed to bring more value to its customers so that they are more satisfied and prouder to be part of the largest community in Cameroon. Equally, we plan on continuing to invest in order to drive Cameroon’s digital agenda.”[en]

Created in February 2000, the Cameroonian subsidiary of the South African giant has established itself as an essential partner of Cameroon for the construction of its telecommunications infrastructure and socio-economic development.

MTN Cameroon, leader in the Electronic Communications sector in Cameroon announces the launch of activities marking the celebration of its 20 years of activity in the country at a press conference in Douala. 20 years during which MTN has particularly contributed to making mobile telephony a growth engine and development tool for Cameroon.

MTN Cameroon was created on 15 February 2000, following the acquisition by the South African Group, MTN, of the State-owned operator, CAMTEL Mobile. The new company was set up with the mission of offering Cameroonians simple, innovative and accessible solutions to meet their communication needs.

In 20 years, MTN Cameroon has turned the telephone from a luxury item reserved for a privileged class into a mass object enabling Cameroonians to communicate easily. Today 9.5 out of 10 Cameroonians live within range of the MTN network which covers more than 7,400 localities across the country.  MTN’s network had 10 million subscribers at 31 December 2019, against less than 5,000 subscribers at the time CAMTEL Mobile was privatized in February 2000. MTN Cameroon has thus contributed to opening up some of the most remote areas of the country, strengthening bonds between Cameroonians and improving the competitiveness of enterprises.

The deployment of MTNs has also enabled to mobilize significant resources for the national economy and State finance. Between 2000 and 2019, MTN Cameroon has invested close to FCFA 1,000 billion for its activities in Cameroon, being the most considerable volume of investment ever realized by a private company in the country. The company has also been one of the largest taxpayers, with 1,226 billion francs CFA paid since 2000 into government coffers as taxes and royalties owed.

At the social level, MTN Cameroon has created a thousand direct jobs while its activity has developed a network of subcontracting and distribution SMEs whose workforce is estimated at more than 200,000 people. Other sectors of national life, notably the sports and cultural sectors, benefit greatly from the dynamism of MTN Cameroon. The company has also invested heavily through its foundation, the MTN Foundation, for noble causes: education, health, the environment, access to potable water and rural development.

Overall, for the past 20 years, MTN has been helping to bring modernity, progress and wealth to Cameroon and Cameroonians. At a point where observers agree to see MTN Cameroon as a great Cameroonian success story; the greatest success of the privatization policy led by the Cameroonian Government since 1995.

The celebration of MTN Cameroon’s 20th anniversary will be marked by commemorative events. This is an opportunity for the company to thank its customers and Cameroonians who have enabled the Company to sustainably set up in Cameroon and grow its business. The celebration is also an opportunity for MTN to reaffirm its commitment to offer Cameroon and Cameroonians the best they rightfully expect from the development of Electronic Communications.

MTN Cameroon, leader of the electronics communications sector in Cameroon, is pleased to announce that the international agency, Rohde & Schwarz, has certified its network as the best in Cameroon for data and voice quality.

The “Highest Network Performance Score Award” was officially presented to the Management of MTN Cameroon during a solemn ceremony at the company’s headquarters in Douala on Monday, 27 January 2020.

Rohde & Schwarz discerned this award to MTN Cameroon following tests conducted in Cameroon during the 4th quarter of 2019 within the framework of a study that involved a total number of 20.000 calls and internet speed evaluations over 9.000km across the national territory.

These independently conducted network quality and performance tests were done on the networks of all mobile operators in Cameroon. The results were compared to those of leading European mobile telephone operators and the following standards were used to assess voice and video quality:

  • Voice quality: POLQA (ITU-T P.863)
  • Data/ Video quality: (ITU-T J.343.1) Visual MOS

The analysis of the data permitted Rohde & Schwarz, a renown international organization that specializes in the auditing of the performance of 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G mobile networks across the globe using the IUT/ETSI standards and methodology, to place MTN ahead of all the other operators in Cameroon with an overall 61-point margin against the second best operator; 562 Vs 501. MTN’s network had:

  • The highest voice performance score in cities and on highways in the placement and quality of calls;
  • The highest data performance score in relation to quality of videos and ability to stream.

“MTN is particularly proud of these results. They are proof that the reforms carried out by the company at several levels are bearing fruit. Over the last four years, MTN Cameroon has invested massively in the transformation of its network to enable it to fully respond to the needs of its clients in the new digital world. We are happy to provide the over 10 million subscribers on our network with the tools they need to remain connected and mobile everywhere they go”, notes Shoyinka Shodunke, Chief Technology & Information Systems Officer (CTIO) of MTN Cameroon.
