MTN Foundation, first corporate foundation in Cameroon, announces the handover to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, this Friday, 24 May 2019, of a water supply system built for the benefit of young farmers supervised by PAIJA (Support Programme for the Installation of Young Farmers) in the “Village of Young Farmers of Nlobesse“, South Region.
The system handed over to the State in the presence of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Gabriel Mbairobe, consists of a high-flow borehole, 30m3 water tower and a water supply network operating through several taps distributed in this village. Nearly 300 youths and their families are the direct beneficiaries of this MTN Foundation project.
The construction of the Nlobesse water supply system is part of the implementation of the Partnership Agreement signed in 2014 between the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and MTN Foundation to improve the living conditions of young farmers supervised by PAIJA (Support Programme for the Installation of Young Farmers) at the Nlobesse and Wassande sites in the South and Adamawa regions, respectively.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, through PAIJA, is working to improve the development of agriculture by encouraging young people to return to the soil.
“Since 2005, we have been contributing to improving the living conditions of communities because national development priorities are the core of MTN Foundation’s actions. We were naturally attracted by the activities of this PAIJA Support Programme to fight poverty, youth unemployment and rural exodus by encouraging young people to return to the soil. To date, we have built roughly 46 potable water access points that benefit about 170,000 people across the country, mainly in rural areas”, commented Jean-Melvin Akam, Executive Secretary of the MTN Cameroon Foundation.
