MTN Cameroon, leading telecommunications company in Cameroon, is pleased to announce that the startup, Innovative Clan (I-Clan), that it has been incubating since 2018, was a finalist at the Daikin– Samurai Incubate Ideathon Airtech Bootcamp Africa that just took place in Nairobi, Kenya.

Of the 160 young companies competing in Africa, Innovative Clan is amongst the ten startups whose projects particularly caught the attention of the jury. I-Clan develops digital products and services in the Fintech domain. The other competitors were from Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal and Tanzania. I-Clan was the only startup representing the whole Central Africa sub-region.

The excellent performance in Nairobi did not go unnoticed. Cameroon’s Prime Minister, Dion Ngute, personally congratulated the Innovative Clan team and reminded them that they are players in Cameroon’s ongoing digital transformation. Ako Joelle, Shafack Amanda, Efuet Flora, Ndam Njei Lesly and Nfor Carlton who are members of I-Clan are all young Computer and Telecommunications Network graduates of the University of Buea.

They started developing the company that they created while finishing their university studies. This initiative was strongly supported by MTN Cameroon which provides them office space, several resources and daily mentoring by experts. « We launched our own startup : Innovative Clan. With assistance from MTN, we are learning a lot in various sectors of activity: marketing, business… Even within the computer science domain, which is our field of expertise, we are mentored by highly skilled individuals.  It is an amazing experience for us », explains Ako Joelle, Chief Executive Officer of I-Clan.

The story between I-Clan and MTN Cameroon started long before the incubation process. In 2018, these youths who were representing the University of Buea, won the application developers contest organized by MTN Cameroon within the framework of its employee volunteer programme, 21 Days of Y’ello Care. Their idea for the integration of mobile money as a payment method on websites was the most innovative at this competition which saw the participation of thirty-five students from seven university institutions in Cameroon.

« We do not only develop the competences of our employees. We also ensure that we reinforce the capabilities of other actors in the digital ecosystem, especially students and computer application developers in the country », explains Shoyinka Shodunke, Chief Technology & Information Systems Officer of MTN Cameroon, on the incubation process of which I-CLAN is benefiting.

Before the Daikin – Samurai Incubate Ideathon Airtech Bootcamp Africa where they arrived in the finals, I-Clan had been selected to participate at the launch of the Youth Connekt Africa initiative last October in Rwanda. The previous month, Ako Joelle’s team was in Accra, Ghana, thanks to an invitation from Google to participate in the Google Sub-Saharan Africa Community Summit.

Today, the young company already has customers in Cameroon and abroad. It is the beginning of a 100% Cameroonian success story. This is a source of pride and encouragement for MTN Cameroon to continue contributing significantly to the development of Cameroonian youth.

MTN Cameroon, leading telecommunications company in Cameroon, announces the end of the first phase of its MTN Youth Internship Programme (YIP) during a ceremony held on 13 December 2019 at its head office, in presence of representatives of ministries in charge of Posts and Telecommunications, Youth and Civic education, Employment and Vocational Training and the Telecommunications Regulatory Board.

The event was an opportunity for MTN to say goodbye to 100 interns who have just spent between three and six months in various Departments of the company across the country. During these six months, the interns each worked under the guidance of a supervisor, thereby enabling the Organization to ensure that the internship period was devoted to learning.

At MTN, I learned that, a job well done distinguishes us from others and gives priority to clients and users,” said Miriane Tchientcheu Kakanou, graduate in Human Resources Management. “The most striking thing was the healthiness of the work environment, respect, friendly relations amongst staff and above all, professionalism and rigour at work,” noted Abdoulaye Ibrahim, graduate in Public Law.

We received a dynamic youth from all regions of Cameroon and social strata of the country. They learned teamwork, meeting management, project monitoring, how to work under pressure… Skills that can only be acquired through experience. Most of all, they were immersed into MTN’s corporate culture and exposed to the values it upholds which have enabled it to become an employer of choice and privileged partner of the State in the development of local talent into world-class executives,” explained Victor Oben, MTN Cameroon’s General Manager of Human Resources.

The leader in telecommunications in Cameroon is delighted to have provided the departing interns with quality experience, and to have transformed them into more competitive professionals on the job market. This corresponds to the main objective of the MTN Youth Internship Programme: support young Cameroonians in acquiring advanced skills.

MTN Cameroon already supports thousands of youths through direct and indirect employment, classical academic internships, the incubation of start-ups run by the youths, etc.

We thought that the impact of this support would be more effective if we could offer internships to young recent graduates, in search of a first professional experience, and academic internships to students with at least the GCE Advanced Level to enable them discover the telecommunications industry and its trades“, said Hendrik Kasteel, Chief Executive Officer of MTN Cameroon.

After thanking employees of the company, the direct supervisors of these interns and the Government for their respective contributions to the success of the initiative, Hendrik Kasteel announced that, “starting January 2020, another hundred youths will be received by MTN Cameroon“.

The 200 interns of the first edition of the MTN Youth Internship Programme were selected from 8000 applicants who submitted their applications on a platform put online by MTN Cameroon in June 2019.

MTN revolutionizes mobile internet billing in Cameroon

MTN Cameroon, leader of the national telecommunications market, announces the launch of a major initiative in mobile Internet billing in Cameroon. When the customer’s Internet bundle is exhausted, their main airtime account will not automatically be debited to continue browsing. The customer now has the choice between renewing their bundle, choosing another bundle or browse off-bundle.

The suppression of out-of-bundle Internet billing has been gradually deployed since the beginning of 2019. This unprecedented change is a revolution in the telecommunications market in Cameroon. Above all, it concretizes MTN Cameroon’s commitment to better listen to its customers, be more transparent and give them enough choice to better control their expenses.

Such an initiative can only really improve customer experience if the network is efficient and Internet cost, accessible. This will be the case with the MTN network, recognized as the fastest network in Cameroon.  The international agency Ookla, a world leader in measuring mobile network performance, has just certified that MTN has the fastest network in Cameroon,” says MTN Cameroon’s Chief Executive Officer, Hendrik KASTEEL.

Always with the aim of giving more choice and value to its customers, MTN Cameroon will launch a smartphone accessible by all levels of society and a new 4G mobile modem. Other initiatives are being prepared to deliver on Hendrik KASTEEL’s promise by which “2019 will be the year of the great MTN Family. The year of our customers. The year of our partners. More than ever, our customers are our N° 1 priority.”
