MTN Cameroon suspends payment of money transfer fees by Mobile Money to fight against the spread of #COVID19
19/03/20
Within the framework of its response plan to the health crisis caused by the Coronavirus / COVID-19, MTN Cameroon announces the suspension, effective Friday, 20 March 2020, of the payment of fees on money transfers between MTN Mobile Money accounts.
This measure suspending the payment of fees concerns money transfers for amounts up to 20,000 FCFA (twenty thousand francs). The measure will be limited to 3 transactions per day, per account, and will be valid for a period of 30 days. This may be reviewed based on the evolution of the health crisis.
MTN Cameroon, by suspending the payment of money transfer fees between Mobile Money accounts, seeks to provide its support in the fight against this Coronavirus, by reducing the use of cash as much as possible, and favoring distance payments.
Mobile Money is a key element in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is a payment method that does not require the use of cash, a possible vector for spreading the virus. The use of Mobile Money may therefore contribute in limiting the spread of COVID-19.
By facilitating distance payments, Mobile Money may equally enable users to overcome the constraints imposed by the measures limiting travel and the movement of persons in a bid to reduce the risks of propagation of the virus. Companies and individuals may therefore carry out necessary transactions, even while isolated or confined thanks to this solution.
“At MTN Cameroon, we have always put our customers first. Faced with the current difficult situation that we are passing through together as a result of the propagation of COVID-10, we will be closer to them. We are doing everything in our power to ensure that they remain connected and in touch with their loved ones. We are equally working to provide them with solutions that facilitate their daily lives as much as possible. Mobile Money is one of these solutions. We encourage companies and Cameroonians to take full advantage of this solution to better handle the current situation”, said MTN Cameroon’s Chief Executive Officer, Hendrik Kasteel.
It should be noted that customers whose Mobile Money accounts are not yet operational may activate them by calling customer services using the number 8787.
